We have tried a number of resources on the market ourselves. Which resources would we recommend? This page describes our findings and our recommendations.

Complete beginner - no knowledge
All-Audio Courses

If you're new to languages or find remembering words really hard, I would suggest the easiest course to begin with is Pimsleur - Essential Russian 1. This starts at zero knowledge and slowly progresses to build up a very basic vocab. If you are a faster learner, good at languages, and can remember words easily, Michel Thomas - Russian Introduction would be a better choice since it covers virtually the same ground as Pimsleur covers in Russian 1 but for very little money.

Software

For learning Russian with the help of your PC, I recommend Rosetta Stone Level 1 It's expensive, but probably the best software based learning resource on the market.

Books

You'll need a good dictionary at your side at all times. The Collins Gems Dictionary is a handy little dictionary that's useful in classes. I also recommend the Frequency Dictionary is useful for concentrating vocab learning to the most commonly spoken words.

Beginner - some basic knowledge
All-Audio Courses

If you've already know some basic words and grammar and have completed either Pimsleur 1 or Michel Thomas - Introduction then the next recommended courses are either Pimsleur 2 and 3 or Michel Thomas - Foundation. You'll get a lot more practice with Pimsleur and the vocab range is larger than Michel Thomas, but Pimsleur costs far more money.

Software

For learning Russian with the help of your PC, I recommend Rosetta Stone Levels 2 and 3 It's expensive, but probably the best software based learning resource on the market.

Books

I recommend the Collins Gems and Frequency Dictionaries. See Beginner - No Knowledge for details. I also would suggest getting a copy of a decent verb conjugation listing book. These are handy reference books when you're stuck with how irregular verbs change in a case. The 501 Russian Verbs or the 555 Big Silver Book are good examples of these. Grammar? Oh yes, we don't want to overload ourselves with to much grammar, but I love the little Essential Russian Grammar guide because it's compact, and only worries you with the smallest and most basic grammar. It's enough to get you going without being too bogged down.

Advanced Beginner - know the basics
All-Audio Courses

If you've had a good grounding of the basics and have completed beginner courses and are looking for the next steps, then I'd recommend Michel Thomas - Advanced. You'll be taught general/concrete verbs, and more grammar.
Semi-Audio Courses

At this stage, you've probably enough knowledge to tackle Ultimate Russian - Beginner/Intermediate which progresses very quickly so may be frustrating if you're a slower learner.

Books

In addition to the books at the lower levels, another handy book is 750 Russian Verbs and their uses which provide many examples of how common verbs are used in real situations. You can live without it, but some may find it handy. You'll probably need a better grammar guide at this stage. Oxford Russian Grammar and Verbs is a handy small volume, but packed with all the essential grammar to become a competent learner. Only the most rare and complex grammar is left out.

Advanced Beginner/Lower Intermediate - Good grasp of basics
All-Audio Courses

If you've completed the beginner courses and are now looking for more advanced courses to take you further then I'd recommend AudiaLearn Russian Level 1. It's a fantastic brand new course - You'll be taught more advanced concepts than MT and Pimsleur can offer such as verbal aspects/imperatives etc
